In an astounding comment posted to Truth Social May 2, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States “won” both World I and World War II, and that he is renaming May 8 as Victory Day for World War II and November 11 as Victory Day for World War I. Completely ignoring history, and the Soviet Union’s extraordinary sacrifices in securing the victory against Nazism and liberation of Europe in World War II, losing 27 million of its citizens in the war, Trump proclaimed that the United States “did more than any other country by far, producing a victorious result…. We won both wars. Nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery or military brilliance.”
Russia is days away from holding its own May 9 celebration to commemorate the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War, as it refers to World War II, which many world leaders will attend. This is not the first time Trump has made such remarks. As early as January 23 this year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to Trump’s remarks in which he said that Russia “helped” the U.S. win World War II, and had lost 60,000 lives in the process.
“The main burden in the fight against fascism and the biggest price for the victory in the fight against fascism was paid by our country, the Soviet Union,” said Peskov. “The U.S. did indeed help. It made a significant contribution. But there’s one caveat: America always makes money, for America it’s always about business,” Peskov emphasized.
