“Big News Conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 A.M., The Oval Office,” President Trump claimed in the evening on May 7, “concerning a MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY. THE FIRST OF MANY!!!”

When the morning rolled around, Trump revealed the identity of the supposedly “big and highly respected country”—turns out it’s not India, it’s not China, it’s the U.K., a country with which the U.S. already runs a trade surplus in goods! (Because of this balance of trade, the U.K. had the lowest tariff rate of 10% on “Liberation Day.")

“The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come. Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement,” Trump posted.
