Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas that Beijing does not want a Russian defeat in Ukraine, because it fears China would become the next target. He reaffirmed, however, that China has not supplied Russia with financial or military aid, arguing that such support would have ended the war long ago. The nature of the discussion was reported by South China Morning Post.
Over a four-hour session, Wang delivered pointed lectures on Realpolitik, warning that an upcoming EU-China summit might be cut short, if the bloc continued to back sanctions. In particular, he vowed retaliation if two Chinese banks were blacklisted. In response to European concerns about China’s rare earth export restrictions, Wang said that license processing time has been improved.
Wang’s firm stance and pointed remarks come just weeks before the July 24-25 EU-China summit in Beijing.
