African Union Considers Attack on Venezuela against International Law

The African Union (AU) issued a communiqué on Jan. 3, posted on their website, expressing “grave concern” regarding the military attacks on Venezuela institutions and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

It also expressed its support for the principles of international law—respect for the sovereignty of states and their territorial integrity, as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations. It urged for dialogue between the nations and respect for constitutional frameworks and expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, and called upon all parties concerned to “exercise restraint, responsibility, and respect for international law to prevent any escalation and to preserve regional peace and stability.”
