Harley Schlanger Speaks at Moscow Event on the 'Spirit of The Elbe'

A Public Forum on April 24 in Moscow included as a speaker Harley Schlanger, who was introduced as the Vice-Chair of the Board of the Schiller Institute. The title was “The Elbe Spirit: Humanitarian Dialogue and Memory as a Basis for Cooperation.” The forum included speakers primarily from Russia and the U.S., as well as several Europeans. The program was opened by video greetings from Maria Zakharova from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also speaking was the Chairman of the Duma Committee on Defense, and several prominent Russian representatives of veterans’ organizations. The forum was organized by the International Union of Non-Governmental Organizations World Peoples Assembly. Other speakers from the U.S. were Joseph Wolff, the son of Joseph Polovsky, an American soldier who was present at the bridge over the Elbe for the encounter with the Red Army, and historian Peter Kuznick.

The overall theme was the need to bring together citizens from around the world to organize for peace and against the revival of Nazism, through maintaining the Elbe Spirit of hope as a basis for peace.
