Putting ‘A Real Solution for Southwest Asia’ on the Table
by Jason Ross (EIRNS) — May. 21, 2026
On Tuesday, May 26, China will convene the United Nations Security Council for a high-level open debate on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the United Nations-Centered International System.” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres will brief the event. Beijing has named the threats directly: More than 60 armed conflicts are currently active, trust among major countries is lacking, and the “rise of power politics” and “bully practices” are identified as the principal challenges to the rule of law in international affairs.
The substance to be put before that debate is in hand. The framework set out by former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu in Project Syndicate in April—a joint Türkiye-Pakistan-Malaysia-Indonesia maritime force to administer the Strait of Hormuz under a Security Council mandate; a renewed nuclear arrangement modeled on the 2010 Tehran Agreement, under which Iran would deposit enriched uranium in Türkiye in exchange for civilian-use fuel; a regional security architecture in the spirit of the 1975 Helsinki Accords; and a Palestinian-statehood track linked to Israeli integration into that architecture—has now converged with the LaRouche Movement’s Extended Oasis Plan for the economic development of Southwest Asia. That convergence came to life at the May 15 EIR Emergency Roundtable, where Davutoğlu and Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp-LaRouche agreed to send the combined proposal to the relevant governments, and pose it to the May 26 session.
Today at 11 a.m. ET (5 p.m. CET), the 155th meeting of the International Peace Coalition convenes under the title “It’s Time To Put a Real Solution for Southwest Asia on the Table.” Speakers include Professor Abdullah al-Ahsan, who endorses Davutoğlu’s proposal as the most viable path out of the current standoff. The IPC has called on participants to endorse and share Zepp-LaRouche’s open letter, “To the Governments of the United Nations: A Policy to Bring Peace and Development to Southwest Asia,” which is being conveyed directly to the governments preparing the May 26 session.
LaRouche Movement organizers have already begun delivering that letter to the venues where it needs to be read. At UN headquarters in New York, organizers discussed the proposal with delegates and staff outside—while within, a representative of Trump’s “Board of Peace” for Gaza was speaking at the UN Security Council. On one side, a Trump-chaired postwar authority for Gaza, with real-estate redevelopment as its visible substance. On the other, a multilateral regional architecture grounded in equal sovereignty and economic interdependence. In Montreal, organizers distributed some 100 copies of the open letter to staff entering the headquarters of the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization, reaching both members of the Canadian Secretariat and also delegates from other nations.
The May 26 debate arrives in the wake of two developments that change the ground beneath it. The Putin-Xi summit of May 19-20 issued a joint declaration on a multipolar world order, with cooperation on space, fission, and fusion as its scientific pole stars, and explicit support for the African Union’s Agenda 2063. And Trump’s reported decision to postpone the resumption of U.S. strikes on Iran during the Hajj has given the diplomatic track several weeks of additional breathing room. Wang Yi will chair the May 26 debate, with the Davutoglu-LaRouche proposal—comprehensive, regional, economically grounded—already circulating among the governments who will speak.
