Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed reporters on Friday at the conclusion of President Donald Trump’s state visit to China. “This was an important meeting in which the two heads of state engaged in in-depth communication and achieved substantial outcomes,” Wang told state media, and called the visit “a historical meeting,” reported CNN. Wang said the two presidents spent nearly nine hours in interactions, “with a tone of mutual respect, shared commitment to peace, and a willingness to cooperate,” reported Xinhua. He stressed the new agreement on a “constructive strategic stability,” saying that it will provide strategic guidance for bilateral relations over the next three years and beyond.
On trade, Wang said they reached “overall balanced and positive outcomes,” including plans to expand two-way trade under a reciprocal tariff reduction framework. They also agreed to establish a trade council and an investment council which will work to address concerns over agriculture product access to each others markets. For his part, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he and President Xi Jinping “did not discuss tariffs.”
