Ossenkopp on Trump-Xi Meetings, in ‘NachDenkSeiten’ Journal

In yesterday’s edition, the German “NachDenkSeiten” journal published an article by the Schiller Institute’s Stephan Ossenkopp on the Trump visit to China, emphasizing the economic dynamic of the latter and U.S. business interest in making deals with the Chinese. Trump’s assertion that a war over Taiwan has to be avoided is mentioned as well. Ossenkopp then focuses on the two remarkable dinner speeches, about which nothing was reported in the Western mainstream media:

“Then there were the two brief but remarkable speeches delivered at the evening banquet. Xi mentioned China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and its goal of “modernizing the country in all areas through high-quality development.” He also spoke about the 250th anniversary of American independence and how the ice between the U.S. and China was broken in the 20th Century: ‘Fifty-five years ago, President Richard Nixon sent Dr. Henry Kissinger on a visit to China, and “ping-pong diplomacy” began between our two countries. Through the efforts of both governments and peoples, the door that had remained closed for over 20 years was opened. This marked a milestone in contemporary international relations. Since then, through mutual openness and cooperation, China and the United States have written many chapters of friendship.’ This is how the Chinese leadership frames Trump’s visit historically.”
