Algeria and Niger Inaugurate the ‘Solidarity’ Power Station

Algerian Prime Minister Sami Ghrib visited Niamey, Niger to attend the inauguration of the “Solidarity” power station on June 4. The 40 megawatt plant is an initiative of the Algerian government to launch very serious cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. Construction began last March following an agreement between the two countries signed in February and could supply electricity to between 20,000 and 40,000 households.

Accompanied by Mourad Adjal, Minister of Energy, and Abed Halouz, Director General of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, the Prime Minister held discussions with his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine,along with senior officials, and was received by Niger’s Head of State, Abdourahamane Tiani.

The Algeria Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab also announced that the first critical welding operations for the Trans Sahara Gas Pipeline have begun. The pipeline will transport vast natural gas from Nigeria through Niger and on to Algeria and directly to Europe.
