Not surprisingly, the Trump administration is still struggling to make any sensible progress in its negotiations with Iran. President Trump continues to make a slew of contradictory statements, telling reporters on June 3 that, “I hear the negotiation itself is going very well, actually,” and that an agreement “might not happen” but also “could happen over the weekend.”
Trump also reversed his claim about Iran’s desire to attain a nuclear weapon, saying during an interview hosted by the New York Post aired June 3: “They’ve already agreed they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon.” When pressed further, he added: “Yeah, they’ve agreed to that. I mean, they can change their mind, but that was one of the things they had to agree. They’ve agreed to that. That was the big thing.”
Despite his claims that he is close to reaching a deal with Iran, Trump claimed that a ceasefire is just a more “moderate” level of fighting, after a number of missile and drone exchanges between the U.S. and Iran this week. “I’d say that in that part of the world, ceasefire is when you’re shooting in a more moderate manner. A ceasefire there is much different than a ceasefire in other parts of the world,” Trump told reporters in the White House.
