UN General Assembly Chose Kyrgyzstan over Philippines for UN Security Council

The world’s nations did not just reject Germany’s bid for a non-permanent UN Security Council seat for the coming two-year period. The UN General Assembly also chose the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan over the Philippines for the Asia-Pacific seat. The lesson drawn by China’s Global Times from this: “The defeats of Germany and the Philippines—both close US allies—show reliance on US-style alliances and bloc confrontation is no longer widely supported by the international community,” as Professor Li Haidong from the China Foreign Affairs University told that Chinese daily.

This is the first time Kyrgyzstan will serve on the Security Council, and it has been nearly ten years since any Central Asian nation was elected to serve a two-year rotating term, the last one being Kazakhstan in 2017-2018.
