Wang Yi Meets with Indian and Russian Leaders at BRICS Forum

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday and Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in New Delhi, on Tuesday, according to a readout released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on the sidelines of the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security held in New Delhi from June 22-23. Improving ties between China and India was the theme of the Doval meeting, and the global importance of China-Russia cooperation was the theme of the meeting with Shoigu.

Wang Yi noted that the leaders from China and India agreed that the two nations are partners instead of rivals, thus forming the most important strategic consensus between the two sides. He called for advancing the restoration of dialogue mechanisms and promotion of exchanges in various fields, such as trade, finance, law enforcement and media.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi noted that “as the two economies with the largest populations, China and India should not only view bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, but also promote cooperation between the two countries from a global perspective.”

In regards to the meeting with Shoigu, the Foreign Ministry reported, “China and Russia should strengthen coordination to continuously develop and expand the BRICS mechanism, making it a true first-tier force within the Global South, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu. Shoigu said that the two nations must “jointly resist various forms of external interference and infiltration in the field of security, and oppose Japan’s attempts at ‘re-militarization,’ Shoigu said, per the readout. The Russian side is willing to continuously enhance strategic coordination with the Chinese side within multilateral mechanisms such as BRICS, and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the region and the world, he noted.”
