President Trump came out of the NATO summit sounding like a flower child talking about how much “love” there had been in this room of serial killers. What threatened to have been a rather contentious event seemed to have ended up with everyone holding hands and singing “Kumbaya.” What happened inside? We know very little from President Trump’s press conference, but there were obviously a number of factors. Firstly, Trump’s decision, which he had announced publicly before the conference in his discussion with President Zelensky, to license the Ukrainians to produce their own Patriot missiles. This no doubt sent a signal that the President was not intent on pulling out all military support from Ukraine. Trump’s rosy view of Ukraine’s military comes, according to Russian Senator Dzhabarov from European leaders and Zelensky filling Trump’s head with incorrect information about the facts on the ground. And Trump stands to gain economically from Ukraine after the war through mineral deals. There were clear promises made by Trump, as he indicated in his press conference, that U.S. military production would be geared up to help meet the needs of the European nations.
