Massive Victory for Progressive Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate in Florida Primary

The African-American progressive Angie Nixon was out spent by more than 16-to-1 in Florida’s Democratic Primary election for U.S. Senate, but still won by a margin of 55.9% to 44.1% against retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, the Ukrainian-born member of the intelligence community who was active in the Russiagate hoax. Nixon, a state representative from Jacksonville, told voters that she is “the biggest pain in [Governor} Ron DeSantis’ ass,” but if they vote for her in the senate campaign she could become “the biggest pain in Donald Trump’s ass.” Florida has 1.5 million more registered Republicans than Democrats, so a victory in the November election will be difficult for Nixon.

Nixon shut-down the state legislature in 2022 with protests against the DeSantis congressional redistricting plan. The DeSantis plan tried to eliminate Black congressional districts and pit Democrats against Democrats in order to achieve total Republican control of the state. In May, Nixon was arrested for leading a sit-in at the office of Governor DeSantis. In the state legislature Nixon introduced a ceasefire resolution for Gaza. In recent months, Nixon joined the Democratic Socialist of America, but she was never endorsed by the group. Many progressives endorsed her campaign including Reps. Maxwell Frost of Florida, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.
