A car bomb placed in a vehicle in St. Petersburg in which an Air Force lieutenant colonel and his wife were traveling, exploded while traveling on a highway in the city. The officer, a part of Russia’s air defense forces was killed and his wife was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
The preliminary cause of the explosion was a gas cylinder explosion, but the presence of an improvised explosive device has also been confirmed. The epicenter was presumably under the driver’s seat. The Investigative Committee for St. Petersburg is opening a criminal investigation in connection with the incident. The agency has not specified the specific statute under which the case was opened.
