The Spread of Disease from Food and Energy Crises

Cholera, a rare Ebola virus, measles and syphilis are on the move. In Uganda, what is apparently a rare strain of Ebola has popped up, with at least 36 cases and 23 deaths. It is being categorized for now as the “Sudan ebolavirus,” for want of a better identification. The current vaccine against Ebola is useless against the “Sudan ebolavirus” and, it appears, also this strain.

In Zimbabwe, measles have killed over 700 children. There are syphilis outbreaks in the U.K. and in Texas. But a cholera epidemic in Syria has been tracked pretty closely by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent.
