Algeria is carrying out “megawatt diplomacy” in the Sahel region. On June 5 Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb laid the foundation stone of the 40 megawatt Algeria-Chad Solidarity Power Plant at N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, in Africa’s Sahel region. Earlier this month the Algerian Prime Minister inaugurated a 40 megawatt gas-fired power station Algeria gifted to Niger, the Algeria-Niger Solidarity Power Plant.
During the ceremony, the Algerian prime minister highlighted major continental projects, including the Trans-Saharan road, fiber optic interconnections, and improvements to air transport and logistics to connect interior regions and boost trade. This policy of infrastructure diplomacy by Algeria began in 2020 with the establishment of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation with a $1 billion budget to finance humanitarian and development projects in African countries, particularly in the Sahel.
