Putin Reconfirms Russian Offer to Take Iran's Enriched Uranium

In his June 4 meeting with the heads of the world’s leading news agencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin reconfirmed Russia’s standing offer to repeat its 2015 role in removing Iran’s highly enriched uranium to Russian territory for dilution under International Atomic Energy Agency control—the structural mechanism that originally made the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action possible.

In 2015, Russia played an entirely positive role by facilitating the removal of enriched uranium from Iran to the Russian Federation, thereby establishing the foundation for the JCPOA—effectively resolving the crisis... We possess the capability to undertake this now as well.

The uranium would come under IAEA control on removal, Putin noted. The diluted material could be returned for peaceful use within Iran’s civil nuclear program. “Wherein lies the problem?” he asked. “I see none.”
