The UN Security Council met yesterday on Syria. The U.S., which holds the rotating presidency of the Council for December, came out defending the anti-Assad narrative, which includes blaming Russia for supposedly destabilizing the country and spreading terrorism. The U.S. mission even invited Raed Al Saleh, the head of the infamous White Helmets pseudo-rescue organization, to testify, and even Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria, paid some mild lip service to the U.S. political objective of regime change.

It was left to Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia to call out the U.S. hypocrisy of supporting terrorist groups as tools for its schemes in Syria. “You were unable to summon the courage to condemn a clear terrorist attack undertaken against peaceful civilians in peaceful Syrian cities,” Nebenzia said directly addressing U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood. “There are no illusions that Washington will ever be willing to sincerely combat international terrorism,” he said, reported Reuters. “To be frank we are pleased that we are on opposite sides of the barricades right now from you.”

Wood responded by accusing Nebenzia of being in “no position to lecture us on this issue” because Moscow “props up regimes that sponsor terrorism around the world.”
